Lady Bulldogs secure playoff berth; Bulldogs still up in the air

Lady Bulldogs get huge win over ICC locking themselves in the state/region tournament

GOODMAN — The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs trailed a good Itawamba Community College Lady Indian team for the majority of Thursday’s game, but inside one minute to go, the Lady Bulldogs, with the backing of an electric crowd, took the lead on a Kierra Gilmore three-pointer at 60-59 and went on for the 61-59 win.

The win locked the Lady Bulldogs in both the MACJC State Tournament and Region XXIII Tournament. The State Tournament begins next week but until the regular season is over on Saturday versus Northwest, the Lady Bulldogs will not know who they play or what time they will play.

East Mississippi leads with North with a 9-3 record followed by ICC at 8-3. Northeast is 6-6 behind the Lady Bulldogs and Northwest is 5-6.

Louise Collins hit one of two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to make the score 61-59. ICC held a 37-23 lead at halftime. Collins led the Lady Bulldogs with 17, Kierra Gilmore had 12 and Dierra Gilmore had 10.

Bulldogs keep themselves in playoff contention with big win over ICC

GOODMAN — The Holmes Community College Bulldogs pulled of an impressive 83-80 win over the Indians of Itawamba Community College here Thursday night. With the win, the Bulldogs went to 6-16 overall and 4-7 in the North Division and have one North Division game Saturday at Northwest to play. Win and with help from others, the Bulldogs can secure a playoff spot.

The win moves the Bulldogs a step closer to securing the No. 4 seed in the North Division. Currently, East Mississippi is 11-1, Itawamba is 6-5, Northeast is 6-6, Mississippi Delta is 5-6 and Coahoma is 5-7 .

The Bulldogs held a 13-point lead in the first half and held a 33-23 lead at halftime. The Indians battled back and tied the game at 66 with 4:20 to play in the game. The Bulldogs took a 67-66 lead when Wil Hayden hit a free throw. The Indians took the lead back at 68-67 when Melvin Morgan hit a two-point bucket.

The Bulldogs took the lead at 69-68 when Hayden made a two-point bucket with a free throw with 3:35 left. With 15.2 seconds to play the lead jumped to six at 81-75 when Jaleel McGee hit two free throws. After Morgan cut the lead to four at 81-77 with 11.6 to play. Hayden then took a charge seconds later, and Curtis Bailey hit two free throws with 4.3 left making the score 83-77 to secure the win.

Hayden led the Bulldogs with 28 points while Bailey had 13, Jeffery Stubbs and Anthony Borden both had 12.
