Bulldogs open season with two wins over Wallace Community College, Ala.-Selma
The Bulldogs opened up the 2011 season with a sweep of visiting Wallace Selma Community College.
In the opener, the Bulldogs exploded for 15 runs on 10 hits. Will Henry led the Bulldogs offensively with three hits including a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the first. Henry also added a single and a double and drove in five runs in the ballgame. Brandon Villarreal and Rafiel Johnson each contributed with two hits a piece. Villarreal also drove in three runs. Josh Crowder, Jermaine Liggins, and Michael Franklin each added one hit a piece. Taylor Burrell picked up his first collegiate win on the mound. Burrell pitched 41/3 innings giving up five runs with only one being earned on four hits and striking out seven. Brandon Byars closed the door picking up the final two outs in the top of the fifth. The only negative aspect of the ballgame for the Bulldogs were the five errors they committed.
In the nightcap, three Bulldog pitchers combined for a four hit shutout. Rafiel Johnson picked up his first collegiate win. Johnson pitched six innings giving up no runs on four hits and striking out six. Caleb Kellum and Channing Sanders combined to pitch a scoreless seventh to keep the shutout in tact. Offensively, the Bulldogs took advantage of five Selma errors scoring six runs on four hits. Josh Crowder, Jayson Keel, Brandon Villarreal, and Trennis Grant each added one hit a piece. The Bulldogs did not commit an error in the ballgame.
Up Next: The Bulldogs will host Illinois Central Community College in a four game series on Friday, February 11 and Saturday, February 12. First pitch for Friday is scheduled at 1 p.m. and for Saturday first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. There will be a doubleheader on each day.
