Phi Theta Kappa chapters at Holmes Community College brought home 21 awards (chapter and individual) from the Phi Theta Kappa Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Convention Friday and Saturday in Hattiesburg.
The Kappa Alpha Chapter (Goodman Campus), Alpha Mu Beta Chapter (Grenada Center) and the Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter (Ridgeland Campus) brought home 12 chapter awards including: Most Distinguished Chapter: Kappa Alpha Chapter, Goodman Campus; Most Distinguished Chapter Finalist: Alpha Mu Beta Chapter, Grenada Center; Top Five for Honors in Action: Kappa Alpha Chapter, Goodman Campus; and Alpha Mu Beta Chapter, Grenada Center; Top Five for College Project: Kappa Alpha Chapter, Goodman Campus; Honors Study Topic, Issue 8: Kappa Alpha Chapter, Goodman Campus; Honors Study Topic, Issue 3: Alpha Mu Beta Chapter, Grenada Center; Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter, Ridgeland Campus; Most Distinguished Officer Team: Kappa Alpha Chapter, Goodman Campus; Five Star Chapter Development Award: Kappa Alpha Chapter, Goodman Campus; Alpha Mu Beta Chapter, Grenada Center; and Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter, Ridgeland Campus.

Lady Bulldogs secure playoff berth; Bulldogs still up in the air
Lady Bulldogs get huge win over ICC locking themselves in the state/region tournament

GOODMAN — The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs trailed a good Itawamba Community College Lady Indian team for the majority of Thursday’s game, but inside one minute to go, the Lady Bulldogs, with the backing of an electric crowd, took the lead on a Kierra Gilmore three-pointer at 60-59 and went on for the 61-59 win.
The win locked the Lady Bulldogs in both the MACJC State Tournament and Region XXIII Tournament. The State Tournament begins next week but until the regular season is over on Saturday versus Northwest, the Lady Bulldogs will not know who they play or what time they will play.
East Mississippi leads with North with a 9-3 record followed by ICC at 8-3. Northeast is 6-6 behind the Lady Bulldogs and Northwest is 5-6.
Louise Collins hit one of two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to make the score 61-59. ICC held a 37-23 lead at halftime. Collins led the Lady Bulldogs with 17, Kierra Gilmore had 12 and Dierra Gilmore had 10.

GOODMAN — The Holmes Community College Bulldogs pulled of an impressive 83-80 win over the Indians of Itawamba Community College here Thursday night. With the win, the Bulldogs went to 6-16 overall and 4-7 in the North Division and have one North Division game Saturday at Northwest to play. Win and with help from others, the Bulldogs can secure a playoff spot.
The win moves the Bulldogs a step closer to securing the No. 4 seed in the North Division. Currently, East Mississippi is 11-1, Itawamba is 6-5, Northeast is 6-6, Mississippi Delta is 5-6 and Coahoma is 5-7 .
The Bulldogs held a 13-point lead in the first half and held a 33-23 lead at halftime. The Indians battled back and tied the game at 66 with 4:20 to play in the game. The Bulldogs took a 67-66 lead when Wil Hayden hit a free throw. The Indians took the lead back at 68-67 when Melvin Morgan hit a two-point bucket.
The Bulldogs took the lead at 69-68 when Hayden made a two-point bucket with a free throw with 3:35 left. With 15.2 seconds to play the lead jumped to six at 81-75 when Jaleel McGee hit two free throws. After Morgan cut the lead to four at 81-77 with 11.6 to play. Hayden then took a charge seconds later, and Curtis Bailey hit two free throws with 4.3 left making the score 83-77 to secure the win.
Hayden led the Bulldogs with 28 points while Bailey had 13, Jeffery Stubbs and Anthony Borden both had 12.

Miles, Rule honored during HEADWAE luncheon
Holmes Community College student Jonathan Miles and instructor David Rule were honored on Thursday, Feb. 3, during the 24th annual Higher Education Appreciation Day-Working for Academic Excellence program in Jackson.
The event is hosted by the Mississippi Legislature and is the Legislature’s way of saying “thank you” to these students and faculty for their commitment to the future of Mississippi.
Each year HEADWAE honors an outstanding faculty member and an outstanding student from each participating member institution of the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities who have made outstanding contributions in promoting academic excellence. The honorees toured the Capitol and attended a luncheon at the Jackson Convention Center.
HEADWAE is supported by the corporate community and is coordinated by the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities. Lt Gov. Phil Bryant serves as chair of HEADWAE.
Jonathan Miles
Jonathan Miles, a 2009 graduate of Kosciusko High School, is the Holmes Community College 2010 HEADWAE student. Miles graduated second in his class. He was a member of the football team, the Big Red Band, the Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and played a lead role in the Junior/Senior play his senior year.
At Holmes Community College’s Goodman Campus, Miles is the president of the Kappa Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and a member of the Student Government Association. He is one of the members of the All-Academic Team for Holmes’ Goodman Campus, and he will be recognized for this in March.
During his freshman year he was a member of “The Growl” staff, Holmes’ student newspaper. Miles is an English education major. His hobbies are playing the guitar, singing, writing songs and stories, and playing and watching various sports.
David Rule
David Rule, a native of Kosciusko, and a mathematics instructor on the Goodman Campus of Holmes Community College, is the 2010 Higher Educational Appreciation Day (HEADWAE) instructor for the 2010-11 school year.
Rule is a 1974 Holmes Jr. College graduate with an associate of arts degree in mathematics. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mathematics education and curriculum from Mississippi State University. He has also completed coursework in Master Level Statistics at MSU.
He began his teaching career in Natchez in 1976, where he was a math instructor and a coach at Johnson Jr. High School and South Natchez High School.
In 1977, Rule returned to MSU to pursue his master’s degree. While pursuing a higher degree, he worked as a graduate teaching assistant with the math department. He was also a survey crew member, a construction crew member, a member of the athletics grounds crew, and a landscaping equipment operator.
After having completed his education, he taught at Kosciusko Jr. High School and Kosciusko High School until 1984, when he came to Holmes to teach math.
In addition to teaching his math classes, Rule serves as an advisor to engineering majors, a Holmes Plus advisor, and a mathematics advisor. He is the District Coordinator for the Mississippi Collegiate Mathematics Association (MCTM) Junior High Math Contest and assists with the statistics for IE/Strategic Planning Goals.
Rule was chosen to be a Holmes Lamplighter in 1994. He is a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society for Education. He has served on numerous committees for the development of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), assisting in addressing SACS Recommendations for the QEP. He was also a Holmes Faculty Association President and Legislative Liaison in 1986, and 1988-2000.
He is a member of Mississippi Collegiate Mathematical Association (MCMA) and has served as Vice-President and President. Rule is also a member of (MADE) Mississippi Association of Developmental Education and (NADE) National Association of Developmental Education, serving as a Presenter at several conferences.
David Rule is also a member of the American Mathematical Association for Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) and Louisiana and Mississippi Association for Two Year colleges (LMATYC), serving the AMATYC as an Executive Board member for two years.
He has been a member of the HCC Faculty Association and Mississippi Faculty Association for Community and Junior Colleges (MFACJC), serving as a Representative to the Legislative Committee and also an Executive Board member.
To date David Rule is the Department Chair for the Holmes Community College Mathematics Department. In February 2010 he was named an honorary member of the Goodman Campus Kappa Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society.
